Roadway Worker Protection Council Chair Doug Dolinar told Roadway Safety magazine it’s time for a “paradigm shift” in how the industry looks at worker safety.

The Council spent the past year laser focused on that issue, producing a Worker Protection Toolkit that provides members aids for that effort. Details on the toolkit are included in the latest issue of Roadway Safety magazine.

ATSSA is known as the industry leader for roadway safety instruction and is looking to expand its team of master instructors.

With a continued emphasis on delivering top-notch training, ATSSA has opened the application process and is looking for individuals with experience in the roadway safety industry and who love to teach and share their expertise. A degree in civil engineering or equivalent experience or education as determined by ATSSA is needed as well as a flexible schedule and willingness to travel to deliver in-person courses.

“Our instructors are at the heart of our roadway safety mission and we are looking for a handful of exceptional individuals to join our team," said ATSSA Vice President of Education & Technical Services.

Inspired by the death of an Indiana traffic control flagger, Senators Mike Braun (R-IN) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) this week introduced a resolution to recognize National Work Zone Awareness Week, which takes place April 17-21.

Ben Fisher was struck and killed in 2019 while working for a traffic control company on Indiana State Road 13, according to a statement from Braun’s office. The statement also notes the increase in work zone fatalities nationwide since 2006 and the goal of increasing awareness of the hazards of work zones for drivers, workers and pedestrians, and the value of training.

“Far too many road workers and emergency servicemen are injured and killed each year by automobile drivers. Ensuring the safety of these essential men and women is a no-brainer, and I’m excited to join Sen. Blumenthal to introduce legislation that raises awareness about making America’s roads less hazardous for everyone,” Braun said in announcing the resolution.

“The ATSSA Training & Products Catalog is a valuable tool for our members and anyone in the roadway safety industry in need of training to operate effectively in work zones and elsewhere,” said ATSSA Training Program Manager Jessica Scheyder. “The catalog also includes information on the benefits of ATSSA membership, the Corporate Training Program, certification and recertification, courses offered through grants and the Online Training Library.”

ATSSA President & CEO Stacy Tetschner today sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg making three requests regarding changes to the Buy America requirements included in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

“In a recent survey of ATSSA members regarding the new Buy America requirements for federally-funded infrastructure projects, there is considerable concern about the impact that these new policies will have on roadway safety,” Tetschner wrote. “Knowing of your strong commitment to reducing the number of fatalities and serious injuries on this nation’s roadways, it is important for you to consider the serious effect the new Buy America requirements will have not only on the roadway safety industry but the public as well.”

Tetschner also noted his concern regarding the "looming deadline" for implementation of the new Buy America requirements.

Join roadway safety professionals for ATSSA’s Midyear Meeting to help shape policies and initiatives for the roadway safety infrastructure industry for the coming year.

Network with more than 350 industry professionals from across the country who are gathering in Providence, R.I., to further innovation and infrastructure for roadway safety, Aug. 23-26.

The meeting is tailored to national committee members and friends to learn, network and build leadership skills.

Every organization wants to avoid worker injuries but ignoring the possibility is an unwise approach.

ATSSA’s Training Department and the Roadway Worker Protection Council present the third of five Worker Safety Webinars on June 7 at 2 p.m. The June webinar covers “safety supports,” which addresses how to assist your team effectively after a workplace incident.
