Crashes plummet in Florida Panhandle after HFST applied

Latest issue of Roadway Safety details efforts in Florida

A key interchange in Florida’s Panhandle provided a classic example of the problem of weather-related crashes that lead to deaths and injuries across the country each year.

From 2019 through 2021, that interchange averaged 82.4 wet-road crashes annually.

But after the Florida Department of Transportation decided to install high friction surface treatment (HFST) and other safety measures at the Interstate 10/Interstate 110 interchange, that number dropped dramatically – to 11 crashes per year.

Roadway Safety magazine interviewed personnel at FDOT as well as experts in the field to understand how HFST works and why the I-10/I-110 interchange saw such a significant improvement in roadway safety.
