The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced a memorandum on July 7, 2017, to issue an Interim Approval for the optional use of two-stage bicycle turn boxes. This allowance is for a revision not specifically described in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD).
