From mobile devices at the project site to laptops at the office, technology is deeply intertwined in our lives and in our work. Emerging technologies offer many great benefits and opportunities, but they also present new challenges in protecting ourselves and our businesses from ever-evolving cyber threats.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reported a 10% year-over-year increase in complaints in its 2023 Internet Crime Report, with more than 880,000 complaints representing $12.5 billion in losses.

Sadly, the roadway safety infrastructure industry is not immune from these cyber threats and an increasing number of businesses have experienced significant disruptions and devastating losses in recent years.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, declared by the federal government’s Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency. This year’s theme is “Secure Our World,” which aims to provide straightforward, actionable guidance to create a safe and secure digital world for everyone.

Each Tuesday this month, ATSSA will share information on a new topic. You can expect to receive tips on the following topics over the next four weeks:

  • Reporting phishing
  • Using strong passwords
  • Turning on multi-factor authentication
  • Updating software.

The guidance we will share is for everyone – with or without technical knowledge – to apply at work and home.

By implementing these simple steps, businesses and individuals can strengthen their defenses against the threats posed by malicious actors.
