Interim approval of Residential Driveway Temporary Signal announced at NCUTCD

During this week’s National Committee on the Uniform Traffic Control Devices (NCUTCD) annual meeting in Arlington Va., the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced interim approval of a temporary traffic control device that was long anticipated.

The device, previously referred to as a Driveway Assistance Device or DAD, is now being referred to as a Residential Driveway Temporary Signal. It can be used along a two-lane, two-way road segment to control traffic entering from residential driveways under limited conditions.

ATSSA Director of Innovation & Technical Services (ITS) Eric Perry said approval of the device is “great news for our members and the roadway safety infrastructure industry as it provides our members another tool in the toolbox to manage temporary traffic control zones safely.”

This device has long been experimented with, going back to 2013, by officials with at least 10 state departments of transportation (DOTs).

It was found to be effective in assisting with situations where residential driveways are within sections of a temporary traffic control zone to control the direction of traffic.

“This device not only helps with the mobility of work zones but also could provide a cost savings to our contractors trying to manage residential driveways within work zones,” Perry said.

In anticipation of this interim approval, the ATSSA ITS Team has been planning a Work Zone Safety Device Demonstration for ATSSA’s 2025 Convention & Traffic Expo. The demonstration will take place on the Traffic Expo floor on March 4 and also include demonstrations of Automated Flagging Assistance Devices (AFADs) and Portable Traffic Signals (PTS).

ATSSA’s Convention & Traffic Expo will be held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 28-March 4. Registration is now open.
