ATSSA examines Maryland changes spurred by horrific work zone crash

Special Edition of Roadway Safety explores what more can be done to protect workers

The death of six workers in a single crash on the Baltimore Beltway in March 2023 shocked and saddened the roadway safety industry.

In the wake of that tragedy, Maryland officials moved swiftly to improve protections for roadway workers and provide better support for their loved ones, demonstrating that change can happen quickly, including new legislation.

ATSSA’s Roadway Safety magazine today releases a Special Edition devoted to that crash and the actions that followed.

  • It documents the steps Maryland officials took to achieve changes and the specific changes that emerged.
  • It lays out details from prosecutors and investigators on the alleged actions of the two drivers who were reportedly traveling “in excess of 100 mph” at the time of the crash.
  • It includes reactions from ATSSA members to the remarkable pace at which Maryland achieved legislative change.
  • And it includes insights from ATSSA members about the multi-pronged efforts still needed to protect the men and women who risk their lives each time they report to work to provide safe roadways for the traveling public.
