Applications due by Feb. 15 for Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarships
A work zone tragedy shouldn’t mean the end of the dreams and aspirations for the worker’s children or spouse. Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarships, offered by The American Traffic Safety Services ATSS Foundation, can help put the worker’s dependents on the road to a brilliant future. Applications for the 2022-23 academic year are due by Feb. 15. The Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship Program provides financial assistance for post-high school education to the children or spouse of a roadway worker killed or permanently disabled in a work zone incident. Applicants who demonstrate a strong commitment to volunteerism may be eligible to receive an additional $1,000 in honor of Chuck Bailey, an esteemed member of the roadway safety industry from Ohio who died in 2002 as a result of an accident. The Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship Program provides financial assistance for post-high school education to the children or spouse of a roadway worker killed or permanently disabled in a work zone incident. The competitive program provides scholarships valued up to $10,000 per student each year. Applicants who demonstrate a strong commitment to volunteerism may be eligible to receive an additional $1,000 in honor of Chuck Bailey, an esteemed member of the roadway safety industry from Ohio who died in 2002 as a result of an accident. The Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship Program celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and has awarded $358,000 since its inception. Thirteen students are currently attending college thanks to a Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship. Two of those also received a Chuck Bailey Memorial Scholarship for this school year. Everyone’s contribution is essential to helping these worthy students pursue their dreams.” The ATSS Foundation is the charitable arm of ATSSA. ATSSA’s 2022 Convention & Traffic Expo marks official start of two new councils
ATSSA’s 52nd Annual Convention & Traffic Expo officially launches two new association councils—the Roadway Worker Protection Council and Women in Roadway Safety Council. The Roadway Worker Protection Council evolved from the Roadway Worker Protection Summit held as part of ATSSA’s 2021 Annual Convention & Traffic Expo. Members who lost an employee as a result of a work zone incident recognized the value of creating resources to help guide others through the process if a tragedy befalls their company. They also recognized the need for greater focus on creating a culture of safety to prevent injuries and deaths. The Women in Roadway Safety Council held an organizational meeting at ATSSA’s Midyear Meeting in August. ATSSA President & CEO Stacy Tetschner originated the idea for that council with the aim of formalizing a way for women to network, learn from one another and develop leadership skills in the male-dominated roadway worker infrastructure industry. That Council will meet Feb. 13 from 7:30-10 a.m. The meeting will include multiple speakers addressing worker and workplace safety issues. The Women in Roadway Safety Council held an organizational meeting at ATSSA’s Midyear Meeting in August. ATSSA President & CEO Stacy Tetschner originated the idea for that Council with the aim of formalizing a way for women to network, learn from one another and develop leadership skills in the male-dominated roadway worker infrastructure industry. More than two dozen members took part in that meeting, including several men who expressed their interest in and support for the council. The Council, which is open to men and women, provides men with the opportunity to hear from industry women as they seek to diversify their teams. At the 2022 Convention & Traffic Expo, the Women in Roadway Safety Council meeting will include a panel discussion with women representing a manufacturer, a contractor and a public agency, said ATSSA Director of Member Engagement Pamala Bouchard. “The panelists will discuss the importance of this new initiative and why it’s beneficial to their organization,” Bouchard said. The Women in Roadway Safety Council will meet Feb. 14 from 7:45-8:50 a.m. ATSSA’s 52nd Annual Convention & Traffic Expo reunites the roadway safety industry in Tampa, Fla., Feb. 11-15. OSHA releases update regarding COVID-19 vaccine mandate
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA released an update on the “COVID-19 Vaccination and Testing” Emergency Temporary Standard ETS in the wake of Friday’s federal court ruling reinstating the Biden administration’s mandate for vaccination or testing. The ETS applies to employers with 100 or more employees companywide. It states that “covered employers must develop, implement and enforce a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, unless they adopt a policy requiring employees to choose to either be vaccinated or undergo regular COVID-19 testing and wear a face covering at work.” OSHA's statement addresses providing employers time to come into compliance with the ETS requirements. It states that “covered employers must develop, implement and enforce a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, unless they adopt a policy requiring employees to choose to either be vaccinated or undergo regular COVID-19 testing and wear a face covering at work.” OSHA issued the following statement after the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, which dissolved a stay by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. “To provide employers with sufficient time to come into compliance, OSHA will not issue citations for noncompliance with any requirements of the ETS before January 10 and will not issue citations for noncompliance with the standard’s testing requirements before February 9, so long as an employer is exercising reasonable, good faith efforts to come into compliance with the standard. OSHA will work closely with the regulated community to provide compliance assistance.” In a message distributed via email, OSHA Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs Doug Kalinowski said that “to account for any uncertainty created by the stay, OSHA is exercising enforcement discretion with respect to the compliance dates of the ETS.” The issue may be decided at the Supreme Court. ATSSA recently posted a blog with information and resources on vaccine mandates.
