National kickoff hosted by Connecticut DOT livestreams on April 21

National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) returns April 20–24, uniting roadway safety partners across the country around this year’s theme: Safe Actions Save Lives.

The annual campaign highlights the critical importance of safe driving behaviors in and around work zones and honors the roadway workers who risk their lives every day to keep America moving.

This year’s national kickoff event will be hosted by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) on Tuesday, April 21, at the CTDOT Farmington Maintenance Garage, 139 South Road, Farmington, Conn. Onsite parking is available but carpooling is encouraged.

The event begins at 10 a.m. ET and will be livestreamed on CT‑N for anyone who cannot attend in person.

CTDOT Commissioner Garrett T. Eucalitto will emcee the event. Scheduled speakers include:

  • Gov. Ned Lamont
  • Sean McMaster, Administrator, Federal Highway Administration
  • Ronnell Higgins, Commissioner, Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection
  • Shari DiDomenico, mother of CTDOT maintainer Andrew DiDomenico
  • Carl Chisem, President, Connecticut Employees Union Independent
  • Nate Brown, Local 478 Business Manager & President
  • Don Shubert, President, Connecticut Construction Industries Association

NWZAW is a national campaign founded through a partnership of ATSSA, FHWA and AASHTO. Each year, states, companies and communities across the country participate in daily activities that promote work zone safety, honor fallen workers and encourage drivers to make safe choices behind the wheel.

The week includes a special focus each day:

Monday, April 20: Work Zone Safety Training Day

Tuesday, April 21: National kickoff event hosted by CTDOT

Wednesday, April 22: Go Orange Day

Thursday, April 23: Social media storm

Friday, April 24: Moment of Silence

ATSSA encourages all roadway safety partners to join the week’s activities, share the message and help advance the goal of reducing work zone fatalities nationwide.
