ATSSA team authors article for NCUTCD research journal

Three members of ATSSA’s team produced an article appearing in the current issue of the Journal of Traffic Control Device Research, a publication of the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (NCUTCD).

Technology Solutions for Temporary Traffic Control Operations” explores the application of Automated Flagger Assistance Devices (AFAD), Portable Traffic Signals (PTS) and Residential Driveway Temporary Signals (RDTS) in enhancing safety and efficiency within temporary traffic control zones.

The article “highlights operational benefits, regulatory considerations, and deployment strategies for each technology. The findings underscore the importance of innovative traffic control solutions in reducing flagger exposure and improving driver compliance in two-lane, one-way work zones.” The authors also note the insights “support broader adoption and standardization of AFAD, PTS and RDTS technologies across transportation agencies.”

The article is the second by ATSSA to appear in the Journal of Traffic Control Device Research and was written by Director of Innovation & Technical Services Eric Perry, Innovation & Technical Services Manager Nagham Matout El-Zine and Master Instructor Tim Luttrell.

The journal “is intended to be written by practitioners and researchers for use by practitioners and researchers who are looking for evidence-based data to inform recommendations for changes in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).”

The ATSSA article is one of six appearing in the current issue of the journal, which was released Dec. 31. The same ATSSA team produced a “Case Study on the Application of Temporary Orange Pavement Markings in Work Zones,” which appeared in the October 2024 issue.
