ATSSA releases updated guidelines for W-Beam guardrail identification & repair

The 2026 update of ATSSA’s “W-Beam Guardrail Identification & Repair Guidelines” is now available online.

This updated resource was developed by the ATSSA Guardrail Committee’s Repair & Maintenance Guidelines Task Force and includes updated text and images.

The purpose of the 48-page guide is to provide engineers and highway maintenance personnel with current state of practice information on identifying various barrier systems and repairing or replacing damaged W-beam guardrail. W-beam guardrail is the most commonly used roadside barrier.

“We provide periodic updates to our resources to ensure the industry is equipped with the latest information for roadway safety infrastructure,” said ATSSA Associate Director of Education Development Jessica Scheyder.
