Smart Work Zones, Innovation and Technology

See what different states are doing as they implement Smart Work Zones (SWZ), work to support Autonomous Vehicles in their state, and use technology to improve safety and communication.

SWZ Example
  • Queue warning automation

SWZ State ITS Contact
Adnan R. Qazi, P.E.
SWZ Examples
  • Real-time Traveler Information also referred to as the “Lane Closure Information System (LCIS)”. Access this system at https://lcis.dot.state.fl.us/
  • FDOT has developed a Lane Closure Information System (LCIS) that communicates with the WAZE App

Automated Vehicles

SWZ Examples
  • Photo speed enforcement through use of mobile van operations staffed by Illinois State Police through hireback funding
  • Queue Detection and Warning through deployment of sensors and portable changeable message signs (PCMS) [certain deployments may include real-time traveler information on PCMS]

Autonomous Vehicles
Illinois DOT’s Advancement of Automated Vehicle Technology. Participate in the research and development of Autonomous Vehicles (AV) by partnering with OEMs (Original Equipment Manufactures – international automakers). The testing of AVs in collaboration with OEMs will help promote safety of AVs while fostering continued innovation between public and private sectors.

Other Innovation
Expanded deployment of portable temporary rumble strips placed in advance of work zone lane closures to enhance drivers’ attention to downstream conditions; addressing distracted and drowsy driving
