3/23/23, 1-2 p.m. ET – Measuring HFST Safety and Functional Performance Over Time. HFST is a pavement treatment with exceptional skid-resistant properties not typically provided by conventional materials such as asphalt concrete or Portland cement concrete. It is intended to reduce crashes by enhancing the skid resistance quality of the pavement at locations where vehicles often brake excessively, and conflicts are high.

As a promising initiative to improve safety, HFST was implemented by the British Columbia (BC) Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure at several signalized intersections in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island in 2018 and 2019. To provide early evidence of the safety effectiveness of the implemented HFST initiative, the University of British Columbia completed a safety assessment study in 2021.

Typical crash types targeted by HFST are road-departure and rear-end, usually observed at intersection approaches, off-ramps, and horizontal and vertical curves. The objective of this webinar is to present the before-and-after safety effectiveness evaluation of the implemented HFST at intersection approaches.

Speakers include Joy Sengupta, P.Eng, RSP1, Principal Highway Safety Engineer and Mohamed Essa, Senior Road Safety Engineer, both from the BC Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure, with David Merritt, P.E., Project Director with The Transtec Group of Austin, Texas (Moderator). Register now.

6/16/22, 2-3 p.m. ET – HFST Installation - Lessons Learned. Many departments of transportation (DOTs) either use or have considered using HFST to improve friction and reduce crashes at critical roadway locations. Factors like site selection, pre-treatment pavement condition and installation methods influence how successfully HFST is implemented. Whether optimizing existing HFST programs or catalyzing a new program, "HFST Installation - Lessons Learned" draws on real-world examples to provide program guidance. Moderated by Kelly Morse with Illinois DOT, leaders from Delaware DOT (formerly), Tennessee DOT and Missouri DOT will discuss what role HFST takes in their state, and the lessons learned from installation of HFST. Watch the recording.

11/16/21, 2-3 p.m. ET – HFST Site Selection Processes for Highway Agencies. In this webinar, three states will discuss various approaches to identifying locations that can benefit from HFST. Moderated by Dave Merritt of The Transtec Group, leaders from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Caltrans will talk about how their HFST programs and site selection methods have evolved over time, current best practices in HFST site selection and future program goals. Watch the recording.

8/24/21, 2-3 p.m. ET – Implementing the Safe System Approach Using Pavement Friction Data. To reduce road crash injuries and fatalities, the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) advocates a Safe System Approach that anticipates human errors and minimizes infrastructure-related risks. Moderated by Magdy Mikhail, PhD, PE, former Director of Pavement Management at TxDOT and current Director of Transportation Industry Solutions at AgileAssets, this panel discussion features current and former leaders of U.S. state departments of transportation offering insights into how to use pavement friction data to implement proactive interventions that save lives. Watch the recording.
