FHWA announces innovations in EDC-5 “On-Ramp to Innovation” program

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has announced the innovations selected for the Every Day Counts (EDC)-5 “On-Ramp to Innovation” program.

The two-year program, which will run 2019-2020, provides training and technical support to state departments of transportation (DOTs), local governments, and private partners to foster roadway innovation at the state level.

FHWA met with stakeholders to develop and finalize the innovation ideas, which had to be market-ready, proven, and underutilized. The following innovations were selected for EDC-5:

Advanced Geotechnical Exploration Methods

Collaborative Hydraulics: Advancing to the Next Generation of Engineering (CHANGE)

Reducing Rural Roadway Departures

Safe Transportation for Every Pedestrian (STEP)

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)

Use of Crowdsourcing to Advance Operations

Value Capture: Capitalizing on the Value Created by Transportation

Virtual Public Involvement

Weather-Responsive Management Strategies

As part of the program, FHWA has pulled together a team of subject matter experts for deployment teams that will work to educate, train, and support participants in implementing the innovations at the state level. These teams provide around $1 million in support per round to program participants.

FHWA has set five Regional Summits across the United States for this fall, where those state DOTs, local governments, and private industry partners will come together and learn about the EDC program and selected innovations for this latest round.
