ATSSA & TRB announce 2021 Traffic Control Device Student Challenge

Challenge offers opportunity for students to innovate for the future of roadway safety

ATSSA and the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Standing Committee on Traffic Control Devices have launched the 2021 Traffic Control Device (TCD) Student Challenge.

The TCD Student Challenge promotes innovation and stimulates ideas in the traffic control devices industry with a goal to improve operations and safety and encourage future generations of roadway safety professionals. As part of the challenge, individuals or student teams submit solutions in the subject area of transportation and roadway safety, based on the chosen topic for the year.

This year’s topic is “Innovative Traffic Control Device Strategies for Speed Management on Limited Access Freeways.”

FCC extends deadline for replies to comments on 5.9 GHz band proposal

The Federal Communications Commission’s Office of Engineering and Technology granted a 21-day extension of the deadline for submitting replies to comments regarding a proposed rule change regarding the 5.9 GHz band, also commonly referred to as the "safety spectrum."

The new deadline of April 27 resulted from the extensive comments submitted and disruptions caused by COVID-19.

ATSSA is "steadfastly opposed" to the Federal Communication Commission's plan to reallocate a portion of the 5.9 GHz band of spectrum to other uses out of concerns for "safety and security," President & CEO Roger Wentz said in a statement filed this week with the Federal Register.

People have until March 9 to submit comments and until April 6 to post replies to the proposal, first announced by FCC Chairman Ajit Pai at a Nov. 20 meeting with Citizens Against Government Waste, New America’s Open Technology Institute, and WifiForward.

ATSSA Announces Innovation Awards at 50th Annual Convention & Traffic Expo

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Jan. 28, 2020) – Three exhibitors at ATSSA’s 50th Annual Convention & Traffic Expo received Innovation Awards today in recognition of new products created by their companies that contribute to the industry’s mission of advancing roadway safety and working Toward Zero Deaths. Products from Royal Innovative Solutions, Pi Variables and VER-MAC were selected as first, second and third place, respectively. They were chosen on the criteria of lifesaving qualities, degree of need, innovation, design and eligibility under the Highway Safety Improvement Program.
