NLGA passes resolution recognizing National Work Zone Awareness Week

Resolution recognizes national awareness campaign for work zone safety

The National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) passed a resolution recognizing Apr. 8 -12, 2019 as National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW).

NWZAW is a national annual campaign that promotes awareness for work zone safety. Each year during NWZAW, public agencies, organizations, and individuals across the country come together to advocate for the women and men who risk their lives in work zones each day to keep our roadways safe.

The resolution was passed at the NLGA 2019 Federal-State Relations Meeting, a meeting held annually in Washington, D.C. for the lieutenant governors to discuss state, federal, and international affairs. ATSSA’s Government Relations staff was in attendance and had asked the resolution to be considered by NLGA.

The NLGA is a professional association for the elected officials first in line of succession to governors in all 50 states and five U.S. territories. The purpose of NLGA is to support the efficiency and effectiveness of the office of lieutenant governor, to foster interstate cooperation, and to generally improve the efficiency of state and territorial administration through education on issues and leadership training.

ATSSA is one of the sponsoring organizations for NWZAW, and joined with the Federal Highway Administration, and the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials to sign an agreement in 1999 to launch the first national NWZAW event.

Each NLGA resolution requires two sponsors from opposite parties. Sponsors of the NWZAW resolution were Lt. Governor Mike Cooney (D – Mont.) and Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser (R – La.). THE NLGA Policy Resolution Committee deliberated resolutions, including the resolution recognizing NWZAW, on Mar. 27, 2019 and the full membership of the NLGA voted on the resolution on Mar. 29, 2019.

“ATSSA is pleased that the Lt. Governors passed a resolution acknowledging the importance of work zone safety awareness as we begin the spring construction season. We are grateful to Lt. Governors Cooney and Nungesser for sponsoring the resolution and seeing it to passage. Public awareness is key in helping to remind motorists to be mindful when navigating work zones,” said ATSSA’s Director of State Government Relations Ashley Wieland.

Lt. Governor members have up to 30 days after the meeting to sign on as a co-sponsor of the resolution.
