What Is ATSSA’s Webucation Center?
ATSSA’s Webucation Center is an exciting new format for our Roadway Safety Training Institute, designed for todays busy professional who needs to stay current and informed. ATSSA will host interactive web-based “webinars” that will open up new channels of information that is relevant and pertinent to roadway safety professionals through the use of computer technology.
What is a Webinar?
Webinar is short for Web-based seminar. Webinar's are just like a conference room based seminar, however, participants view the presentation through their Web-browser and listen to the audio through their telephone. A key feature of a Webinar is its interactive elements - the ability to give, receive and discuss information. Contrast with "Webcast", in which the data transmission is one way and does not allow interaction between the presenter and the audience
What are the benefits of a Webinar?
- Time Efficient: Webinars last from 1 to 1½ hours
- Convenient: No travel- can easily fit into a busy schedule
- Cost effective: One fee and multiple individuals may listen to topic
- Educational: Up-to date, real-time exchange of information and pooled experience
- Interactive: An excellent opportunity to listen, share and participate with other roadway safety professionals on concepts, challenges, and solutions relevant to our industry and for tomorrow’s business needs.

A phone line for listening to the teleconference portion

CABLE BARRIERS SYSTEM; STATE-OF-THE-PRACTICE
With the increasing number of cross-median freeway crashes, caused in part by increasing lane densities and higher speeds resulting from increasing suburbanization, State DOTs are considering installing more median barriers. Due to its effectiveness in preventing cross-over median crashes, cable median barriers have become an attractive option for most states. As more cable barriers are being installed in the field, more insight is being gained into the performance of the cable barrier systems. Over the passage of a few years, many related issues have been identified to further enhance the in-service performance of the cable barriers. Various in-depth studies have been performed to evaluate the in-service performance of the cable barrier systems. Even though a great deal of information has been gained regarding the cable barriers, there are still many issues that require further research.
This Webinar attempts to present a state-of-the-practice of cable barrier systems in the United States. Information being presented has been gathered through an in-depth literature review of existing studies and performance evaluations related to cable barriers, and through a state-of-the-practice survey of state DOT personnel who deal with the installation, maintenance, and repair of the cable barriers in their states. At the end of the presentation, some concluding remarks and the areas for further research have been identified.
