Making Roads Safer is up to All of Us
Armed with good information about the principal safety problems on our roads and the available solutions, you can make a difference in improving roadway safety where you live. Get the facts. Know the solutions. And take action to put those solutions into effect.
How? Here are some suggestions:
- Write an editorial to your local newspaper
- Write a brief article for your employer's newsletter
- Contact your local service organizations (i.e., Elks, Kiwanis, Rotary)
- Contact community leaders, especially those interested in transportation issues
- Contact your mayor’s office
- Contact your county supervisor’s transportation office
- Contact your police chief
- Contact your fire chief
- Contact your Emergency Medical Services providers
- Contact your board of education
- Contact your state chapter or representative of the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA)
- Contact the Governor’s office and the person in charge of transportation
- Contact the state Legislature’s Transportation Committee
- Contact the state Legislature’s House Transportation Chairperson
- Contact the state Legislature’s Senate Transportation Chairperson
- Contact your local and state Chamber of Commerce and the person responsible for transportation
- Contact your local UPS and Federal Express offices and ask for their support
- Contact your state traffic engineer
- Enlist the support of other concerned citizens
- Make presentations at city council/county commission meetings
- Partner with other safety-minded organizations (i.e., MADD, insurance companies, etc.)
- Develop private funding options
- Contact state and local Department of Motor Vehicle offices
- Contact state and local Department of Public Safety or State Highway Patrol
- Contact local television stations (i.e., Morning News or Public Service Announcements)
- Team with local roadway safety businesses
- Look for “high incident or accident locations” and provide low cost safety solutions to decision makers
