Course Description

ATSSA is an approved provider for this Virginia Advanced training course.

This course addresses the entire process for designing, installing, maintaining, and evaluating temporary traffic control in Virginia work zones. The course includes an introduction to temporary traffic control standards and guidelines, design concepts, and several hands-on exercises. The course information is taken from the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual and the MUTCD.

This course is recommended for traffic engineers, engineers, engineering technicians, consultants, and other individuals responsible for temporary traffic control design and plan approval. This course does not grant authority to individuals to approve design plans.

NOTE: This course is recognized as ATSSA's TCDS course even though the state mandates a different course title.

Prerequisites & State-Specific Information

Previous experience in work zone design is not required for this course. Completion of the VA Basic (TCT) or VA Intermediate (TCS) courses are not required to take this course.

Students are required to complete a written examination and will receive a certificate of completion.

Certification Information

After completing this course, take the next step in your career by adding an ATSSA certification designation.

Virginia Advanced Certification Requirements:

  • Pass the VA Advanced (TCDS) training course with 80% or greater on exam
  • Possess one year (2,000 hours) work zone design experience
  • Complete the Certification Application and pay the Certification Fee
  • Provide two references to verify work experience
  • Be approved by the ATSSA Certification Board

NOTE: This certification designation DOES NOT replace an official PE stamp. TCPs still need to be reviewed and approved by a PE.

Certification is valid for 4 years. At the end of 4 years, the student must take a recertification exam to be recertified. To learn more about here
