TRAFFIC CONTROL DESIGN SPECIALIST (TCDS)

Course Description

Two days/16 hours (One day/8 hours format available); Classroom Course; Closed or Co-sponsored Option*

This course addresses the entire process for designing, installing, maintaining, and evaluating temporary traffic control in work zones. This course will teach students to understand the engineering concepts necessary to properly design effective traffic control plans, as well as the fundamental principles of temporary traffic control, the sources of standards and guidelines, the proper processes and procedures for adjustments, and legal implications. It is recommended for traffic engineers, engineering technicians, consultants, and other individuals responsible for temporary traffic control design and plan approval.

NOTE: The TCDS course is also available in a one-day (8 hour) format, which is intended for individuals who are already Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) certified. Please note that the TCDS course does not grant authority to individuals to approve design plans.

Prerequisites & State-Specific Information

Previous experience in traffic control design is not required for this course. The one-day course format is intended for individuals who are already TCS certified.

CEUs: 0.75 (one day) or 1.50 (two days)

Certification Information

After completing this course, take the next step in your career by adding an ATSSA certification designation.

TCDS Certification Requirements:

  • Pass the TCDS Course with 80% or greater on exam
  • Possess one year (2,000 hours) temporary traffic control design experience
  • Complete the Certification Application and pay the Certification Fee
  • Provide two references to verify work experience
  • Be approved by the ATSSA Certification Board
