Safer Roads Save Lives
More motorists will 'hit the road' as the summer vacation season gears up, which coincides with an increase in work zone and roadway construction activities. In fact, four out of five people killed while attempting to negotiate work zones are motorists, not roadway workers.

The information and resources available on this page will help the public as they travel America's highways.

Safety Issues
Local Roads
The dangers faced by drivers on two-lane rural roads are often a surprise to motorists.  According to the Federal Highways website: " Rural road safety is a particular concern, because the majority of highway fatalities take place on rural roads. Rural roads account for approximately 40 percent of the vehicle miles traveled in the U.S., but almost 57 percent of fatalities."  Click here to download FHWA publication DOT HS 810 996 - Traffic Safety Facts: Rural/Urban Comparison.

Speeding
According to statistics gathered by the Federal Highway Administration, "Almost 1 of every 3 traffic fatalities is related to speeding."  Especially when traveling through work zones, motorists should be aware of speed limits and obey them. This single change in driver behavior can save countless lives and prevent injuries.
