Making Roads Safer is up to All of Us

Armed with good information about the principal safety problems on our roads and the available solutions, you can make a difference in improving roadway safety where you live. Get the facts. Know the solutions. And take action to put those solutions into effect.

How? Here are some suggestions:

You can visit ATSSA's Grassroots website - contact your local representative and tell them how roadway safety funding can save lives and prevent injuries.
You can also:
  1. Write an editorial to your local newspaper
  2. Write a brief article for your employer's newsletter
  3. Contact your local service organizations (i.e., Elks, Kiwanis, Rotary)
  4. Contact community leaders, especially those interested in transportation issues
  5. Contact your mayor’s office
  6. Contact your county supervisor’s transportation office
  7. Contact your police chief
  8. Contact your fire chief
  9. Contact your Emergency Medical Services providers
  10. Contact your board of education
  11. Contact your state chapter or representative of the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA)
  12. Contact the Governor’s office and the person in charge of transportation
  13. Contact the state Legislature’s Transportation Committee
  14. Contact the state Legislature’s House Transportation Chairperson
  15. Contact the state Legislature’s Senate Transportation  Chairperson
  16. Contact your local and state Chamber of Commerce and the person responsible for transportation
  17. Contact your local UPS and Federal Express offices and ask for their support
  18. Contact your state traffic engineer
  19. Enlist the support of other concerned citizens
  20. Make presentations at city council/county commission meetings
  21. Partner with other safety-minded organizations (i.e., MADD, insurance companies, etc.)
  22. Develop private funding options
  23. Contact state and local Department of Motor Vehicle offices
  24. Contact state and local Department of Public Safety or State Highway Patrol
  25. Contact local television stations (i.e., Morning News or Public Service Announcements)
  26. Team with local roadway safety businesses
  27. Look for “high incident or accident locations” and provide low cost safety solutions to decision makers
  28. Seek out the the SHSP representative at State and Local levels
  29. Seek out, research safety-related websites
  30. Seek out, research local roadway safety audits
