State-Specific Safety Plans and the ATSSA SHSP Council

About Strategic Highway Safety Plans (SHSPs)

  • Under the current highway bill (MAP-21) and the Highway Safety Improvement Plan (HSIP), state Departments of Transportation are required to craft a safety plan specific to their state’s safety needs. The goal of a state’s SHSP is to create the best opportunities for investments in transportation and infrastructure to reduce deaths and serious injuries on their road network. SHSPs are critical and comprehensive tools for states to keep moving Toward Zero Deaths.
